It has come to my attention that there may be a number of larger engine
scooters which may have been mis-classified within MPI’s systems. This would imply that the rates being assessed for these bikes may be incorrect and higher than they should be.

To the best of my knowledge, the following makes/models *may* be affected (it
is possible that other models could also be implicated):
Aprilia Scarabeo 500
Suzuki Burgman 400/600
Piaggio X9
Honda Silverwing
Honda Big Ruckus

Motorcycles are differentiated in terms of insurance rates by body-style and
engine displacement. “Motorscooter” is one such body style. Other body
styles include “touring”, “sport”, and “cruiser”. The Motorscooter body
style is defined by the presence of a legshield, step-thru frame,
floorboards, and an upright seating position. Classifications are assigned
nationally by the Insurance Board of Canada for all vehicles. I believe that
IBC's classification of certain bike may have been erroneous. In the case
of motorcycles, insurers such as MPI may apply differing classifications
within their province. This type of adjustment is not generally permitted
for other vehicle classes such as private passenger cars/trucks..etc.

Some larger engine scooters appear to be correctly classified as
motorscooters, while others are not. Since motorscooters are to receive a
significant rate decrease this year, the correct classification will no doubt
be important.

It is my opinion that MPI should review and correct the classifications of
these bikes, issuing any corrective adjustments/refunds for previous or
current insurance years as required. I will work in a positive and
professional manner towards this goal. However, there is no guarantee that
the arguments I have presented to MPI will be necessarily accepted or agreed to and there is no definite timetable as to when this may be resolved. As of this writing, MPI is contacting the IBC for clarification on the matter.

Below are some recommendations on action you may wish to take on your own:
1. If you have doubts or concerns about how your bike is classified, you may
contact the MPI call center or your insurance broker to confirm how it has
been classified (i.e., what body style and insurance class).
2. If you determine that your bike may be incorrectly classified, MPI can
advise you on the process to follow to have the error assessed and considered for correction.

If you have any questions about this matter or would like clarification or
assitance, please feel free to contact me by email at
